You may have all the styling tips out there, but it is more important not what to do when it comes to designing your beloved home.
You may have read every home style guide out there, but one of the most important things to learn is – what not to do. Styling your home is completely up to you and your family's taste, but there are definitely some features you should avoid at all costs, especially if you plan on selling one day.
Size is important
The key is not to make the rooms appear smaller than they actually are. When decorating the living area, choose one large piece of art to decorate the room. With a centrepiece in the room, it will stop you from over-cluttering it with too much furniture. Design your space around that one piece of art with elegant, yet simple furnishing. Less is more – when designing a room anyway.
Be careful when selecting curtains, they may overshadow the room and make it appear smaller.
Hanging heavy curtains
Luscious curtains can catch your eye and really add a beautiful warmth to the room. However, beware that they don't close-in the room. According to Home Life, overbearing curtains can block out too much light and distract from other features in the room. If you want your room to appear more open and less cluttered, then simple, beige curtains are the way to go.
Going without a rug
Having a floor without a rug is like not hanging anything on the walls. If you have carpet laid down and don't think you need need a rug, then think again, they are perfectly fine on carpet and assist to define the different zones of a room. A colourful or patterned rug can complete a room especially if you have wooden floors. It will keep the bedroom or living room warm under your feet.
The only thing you should note is the size of the rug – and surprising it is better to go bigger than smaller. A small rug can leave the room looking unbalanced. Try and find a large rug and then line up with the front of the furniture.
A rug can add depth and comfort to a room, the key is to not pick one that is too small.
Furniture that is too large
This seems obvious but many people make the common mistake of buying large comfortable couches that simply overtake the room. Comfort is important, so try and look for corner couches that will allow for maximum relaxation without taking up too much space. An alternative is getting a couple of lazy boy chairs that will allow you to be comfortable but fold away nicely when not being used.
